How to Choose the Right One? (Part 2 of 2)
Consider these key factors:
- Space & Layout: If you have a short or inclined driveway, a sliding gate or bollards may work better than swing gates. If you have ample space and love a traditional look, swing gates are fantastic. For very wide entrances, sliding or bi-parting sliding gates are often the most practical.
- Use Frequency: For a busy commercial entrance with hundreds of cycles a day, barriers or high-speed bi-fold gates might be best. For a home where the gate opens a few times a day, any will do; focus more on aesthetics and convenience.
- Security Level: If pedestrian security is important (keeping people out, not just cars), a full gate (swing or sliding) is needed. Bollards and barriers only stop vehicles. For high security against vehicle ramming, bollards or certain heavy-duty sliders are prime.
- Aesthetics: What style suits your property? Swing and sliding gates come in all designs (as we covered in the styles post). Bollards and barriers are more utilitarian-looking (though bollards can be sleek, they’re still modern and subtle). You wouldn’t typically put a barrier at a countryside cottage – it would look out of place, whereas a pair of wooden swing gates would be charming.
- Budget: Swing and sliding gates can be comparable in cost. Bi-fold gates tend to be more expensive due to complexity. Bollards and high-end barriers can also be pricey, especially if multiple needed. Also factor in groundworks: sliding gates need a concrete foundation or track, bollards need excavation, etc. Rawson Automation can provide quotes for different options to help you weigh this.
- Maintenance: All automatic systems need some maintenance, but barriers have wear on springs, swing gates have hinges to upkeep, sliding gates have tracks to keep clean, and bollards have underground parts prone to dirt – each has its own regimen. If you want as little maintenance as possible, often a sliding or swing with quality components is straightforward. Bollards likely need the most diligent maintenance to ensure reliability long-term.
Real Examples
To illustrate: A client in Huddersfield on a hill had an uphill sloping drive – swing gates were impractical because they’d hit the slope, so we installed a cantilever sliding gate that doesn’t require a level track. Another example: a Harrogate hotel with a narrow entry wanted something fast and not too imposing – we used two automatic bollards which rise at night for security but stay lowered during business hours for a welcoming open feel. For a new housing development in Bradford, they chose bi-folding speed gates at the entrance for both security and to avoid traffic backup onto the main road (since they open and close quickly for residents).
